If you are missing a tooth, there are multiple treatments that can help you restore your smile

If you lose a tooth and do not get it replaced, be ready to experience some physical changes as a result. You may begin to notice that your remaining teeth begin to move to compensate for where the missing teeth were located. Other than altering your appearance, it can also lead to other dental concerns like gum disease and decay.

If you haven’t thought about getting that tooth replaced already, we highly recommend that you start! One of the first things that you need to consider is what options are readily available to help you.

Dental Implants

Implants are surgically placed into your upper or lower jaw, where they function as an anchor for an implant crown, which is placed on top of your implant and looks almost identical to your remaining teeth. This is a great way to replace a single tooth or even several teeth. Most implants are made out of titanium which is strong, lightweight and is stable in the mouth.

However, implants are not an option for everyone. Patients who receive a dental implant need to:

  • Be in good oral health
  • Have adequate bone structure to support the implant
  • Be ready to commit to a daily oral care routine and regular dental visits

Advantages of implants:

  • An implant is similar to your natural teeth
  • Implants can last for a long time
  • Made out of a strong material
  • Help prevent shrinkage of the jawbone from tooth loss

Bridges

Another option to restore a missing tooth is through a bridge. This is a type of restoration that fills the space where one or more teeth have been lost. A bridge can be bonded or cemented into place so that only the dentist can remove it. This is known as a fixed bridge.

How is a bridge placed?

Your bridge will usually be placed over two visits.

On your first visit, Dr Ironside will take an impression of your teeth and the space between your teeth and send the impression to a dental laboratory. Here, technicians will make your bridge. A bridge is usually constructed out of ceramics but can also be constructed out of metal or glass ceramics.

During your follow up visit, Dr Ironside will fit and adjust the bridge, so it fits comfortably in your mouth.

Advantages of bridges:

  • Looks, feels and functions like natural teeth
  • Does not require removal for cleaning
  • Costs less than implants

Removable partial denture

Partial dentures usually have replacement teeth fixed to a plastic base which matches the colour of your gums. Unlike the other treatment options, removable partial dentures can be easily taken out of the mouth for cleaning. These dentures will have some kind of clasp that attaches to your natural teeth.

It may take some practice to get used to your partial denture, feeling odd or tight for the first couple of weeks. But in time, you should find them comfortable.

Once your missing teeth are replaced, eating should be a much more pleasant experience. Since missing teeth can make it difficult to speak clearly, wearing a removable denture can improve your speech too.

Advantages of removable partial dentures:

  • Usually less expensive than fixed bridges or implants
  • Usually easier to repair than fixed bridges
