Just Follow These 3 Easy Steps and You Can Actively Maintain Good Oral Health

Avoiding the need for major dental work is not an altogether difficult task. In fact, following Ironside Advanced Dental‘s three easy steps we can help you avoid the need for major dental work.

In terms of your health, it is much better for you to maintain and keep your natural teeth. Your teeth stimulate jawbone growth, make eating and speaking easier and the health of your teeth also plays a role in your overall health. While dental implants are an effective whole-tooth replacement, they are still not as good as a natural tooth—although if you have lost a tooth, dental implants are the best replacement because they do replace the whole tooth.

3 Easy Steps to Maintain Good Oral Health

Looking after your oral health can be the difference between needing a filling and needing root canal treatment.

A filling is a fairly general, non-invasive procedure that ensures the continued health of your tooth without—normally—compromising the integrity of the tooth. However, a root canal treatment, while saving your tooth, often leaves it weak and in need of a dental crown to strengthen and protect it.  Preventing the need for a root canal treatment, or indeed major dental work is not a difficult exercise.

Three steps that you can take to maintain good oral health:

1.       Brushing and flossing

You have probably been told that you need to brush and floss twice a day to keep your teeth clean, but did you know that you can brush your teeth incorrectly?

If you:

  • Brush too hard
  • Don’t brush long enough
  • Don’t change your toothbrush every three months

You can actually damage your teeth. The other thing that you don’t want to do is not floss—flossing gets to the part of your teeth that the toothbrush can’t. Flossing gets to the part of your tooth where food is more likely to get stuck, and not only does flossing look after your teeth but it also looks after your gums.

2.       Diet

Most people know what foods to avoid: the ones with lots of sugar, high in acids and so on. But what about the foods that are purportedly good for your teeth? Research has shown that foods such as cheese and high-fibre fruits and vegetables are good for your teeth in a number of ways.

Cheese and high-fibre fruits and vegetables are good because they help stimulate saliva which neutralises tooth-damaging acids, and the calcium helps replace minerals leached from the teeth.

3.       Visiting the dentist

A regular dental check-up allows us to assess your oral health and diagnose any issues. By visiting Ironside Advanced Dental in Sydney every six months we provide a deep scale and clean to help prevent cavities. If so you have cavities, a filling is a fairly quick and virtually painless treatment which can help keep your teeth healthy.
