Or, do strawberries really whiten your teeth?

For a long time, it was thought that strawberries could help whiten your teeth. Now, no one ever said, “eat a punnet of strawberries and you’ll have a brighter, whiter smile.” But it was thought that the acid content in strawberries, mixed with a little baking soda could whiten your smile.

However, a recent study published in the Journal of Operative Dentistry found that all strawberry and baking soda does is remove the plaque on your teeth, which can give the appearance of a whiter smile.

The study was conducted on extracted teeth that were brushed with strawberries and baking soda for twenty minutes three times a day for ten days: which followed the recommendations of natural teeth-whitening enthusiasts.

The reason for strawberries’ lack of teeth whitening effects is: strawberries lack hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide. Without these two ingredients, it’s difficult to whiten teeth. Which may throw a questionable light over whether or not apples and lemons can whiten teeth either.

Dental treatments from a dentist

To receive the best treatment for your teeth, you should visit a dentist. Qualified to look after your oral health, a dentist is able to determine what you need and what will work for you.

For cosmetic dentistry, you should visit a prosthodontist, who is a specialist cosmetic dentist and is best equipped to help you restore the function and appearance of your smile.

When you visit Dr Ironside he can assess your oral health and determine the best course of action for you. In looking at the health of your teeth, gums and jaws, Dr Ironside will be able to determine what the best treatment for you is.

If that is teeth whitening—and there are cases when teeth whitening can help stained teeth—Dr Ironside will explain the entire process to you, and what you’ll need to do to achieve the best results. And part of achieving the best results is providing you with a take-home kit to help you maintain results. Because what you need to realise is that teeth whitening is not permanent.  At most it will last 9 to 10 months: possibly longer if you maintain a good at-home oral hygiene routine and continue to use the take-home kit.

When would a teeth whitening treatment not be effective?

The health of your teeth plays a big role in determining the effectiveness of treatment. For example, if the reason for your stained teeth is not cosmetic then you may require restorative treatment such as root canal therapy or a dental crown.

That is why it’s recommended you visit a dentist for your cosmetic dentistry needs. Because an over-the-counter tooth whitening kit cannot diagnose the cause of discolouration.
