Not everybody is lucky enough to have the perfect teeth or the perfect bite, and for those that don’t, it can cause some serious problems in terms of pain and functionality within their mouth. An incorrect bite can lead to your teeth not forming properly and causing more complex problems with your jaw, and one of the problems is TMJ syndrome.

TMJ stands for Temporomandibular Joint. This is where your incorrect bite has caused such a problem upon your jaw; you will feel major discomfort within the joints of the jaw. This is because misaligned teeth or an incorrect bite cannot support your jaw muscles correctly when eating or chewing. The muscles will then re-arrange and equip them to cope with this incorrect bite but can cause major problems further down the track.

Some of the symptoms for TMJ are, jaw clicking, grinding of the teeth, migraines, ringing in the ears, neck pain and many more. For most people the symptom of headaches is the most common, and they usually associate this with a medical problem that can be fixed or treated by the doctor, yes they can give you pain killers, but this is not what is needed when you have TMJ. This is why it is imperative that you go to see your dentist if any of these symptoms arise.

The actual solution to TMJ is a jaw splint being placed into your mouth, to recover the perfect bite, and once again relax the muscles into the position and shape that they should be in. Although this is the main and most effective treatment, each patient differs and a consultation with your dentist will determine what procedure is the best for you.
