What is the difference between the two?
Dental veneers are made from porcelain and are very thin. They are bonded to the front of the teeth to conceal cosmetic imperfections. Crowns, on the other hand, are much thicker and are designed to cover the entire tooth. Crowns can be made from various materials, including porcelain and metal alloy. While veneers are often a good option in cases where it is necessary to conceal flaws like discolouration, chips, cracks and mild misalignment, crowns are often used to restore teeth that have been damaged by decay. Crowns can also be used to restore teeth that have been damaged by general wear and tear, as well as broken or fractured teeth. They are also a common treatment used to strengthen teeth following root canal therapy, especially in cases where a large dental filling has been placed.
What do the treatments involve?
If you choose to have dental veneers placed, your teeth will need to be prepared first. A small amount of enamel will be shaved off of the surface of your teeth and an impression will be made. This impression will be used to fabricate your veneers. When they have been constructed, your veneers will be bonded onto the surface of the teeth before they are contoured and polished for a natural-looking appearance.
If you choose to have a crown placed, an impression of your tooth will be taken. This impression will then be sent to a dental laboratory where your crown will be fabricated. A temporary crown will be applied while you wait for your permanent restoration. At your next appointment, the temporary crown will be removed and your permanent crown will be carefully secured in place.
