It’s looking after your whole mouth to treat a dental issue

At Ironside Advanced Dental in Sydney when talking of holistic dentistry, we don’t mean that biological stuff. We mean holistic as in treating a person by “taking into account mental and social factors” as well as the symptoms of your dental health problem. Most good caring dental practices are in fact holistic, or maybe that should be spelt “wholeistic”.

Why is this important, or even necessary?

Knowing why a patient wants a particular dental treatment as well as how they perceive their smile does affect how Ironside Advanced Dental proceeds with treatment.

Your treatment should be about restoring the health of your smile while achieving realistic aesthetic results.

Achieving realistic aesthetic results

A successful treatment, said tooth whitening or a comprehensive smile makeover, is about having your smile (teeth and gums) healthy and looking good. If you have tooth

—Ironside Advanced Dental uses Zoom—we are not looking to give you a Hollywood smile. The aim is to give you a whiter, healthier smile, not a smile which requires sunglasses to look at. The smile needs to be part of your whole face, not something surrounded just by the lips. In fact, the best results are when somebody simply says that you look really well or nice and does not notice the teeth straight away because they blend in.

With a smile makeover – two or more treatments to restore the health and appearance of your smile – the aim is more or less the same. Dr Ironside will assess your oral health as well as ascertain what your desired outcome is before deciding which treatments are best for you.

It’s making choices such as dental veneers or dental crowns, implant-supported bridge or implant-supported dentures: teeth whitening or no teeth whitening. An important consideration is about how much wear and tear has happened to your teeth. If there has been a lot of restorative history over the years, the answer may not be that simple and require the use of crowns rather than, for example, veneers.

Tooth whitening with your smile makeover

When you get restorative or cosmetic dental work such as dental crowns or veneers it is important to decide if you want your natural teeth whitened first. For two reasons:

  1. Porcelain restorations (such as crowns or veneers) are colour matched to the shade and colour of your natural teeth. Which leads to the second reason:
  2. If your teeth are slightly discoloured you may want to have them whitened to a healthier appearance before restorations are placed because porcelain restorations cannot be whitened.

By assessing your smile, your expectations and walking you through what a smile makeover can do for you, it helps to give you realistic expectations of your end result after your makeover.
