Periodontitis, the Advanced Form of Gum Disease, Has Been Linked To a Variety of Serious Illnesses
In a recent article published by a heart surgeon, he made the observation that chronic inflammation is a contributing factor in heart disease. Without inflammation, cholesterol would be free to move through the body as it’s supposed to. According to this heart surgeon, it is inflammation that causes cholesterol to get trapped.
What has this got to do with gum disease?
Gum disease causes inflammation and higher levels of bacteria in the mouth. This inflammation can travel through the bloodstream to the rest of the body.
Did you know that gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults?
Periodontitis is where the inner layer of the gum and bone pull away from the teeth and form pockets. These pockets between the teeth and gums collect debris and can become infected. As periodontitis progresses the pockets deepen and more bone and gum tissue is destroyed.
In normally healthy people, the bacterium in the mouth that travels through the rest of the body is usually harmless. There are a number of health issues that have been linked to gum disease, such as:
- Stroke
- Diabetes
- Cancer
- Heart attack
- Heart disease
- Chronic kidney disease
- Dementia/Alzheimer’s
- Premature birth
A small study was conducted with a group of nuns between the ages of 75 and 98. It was found that those with the fewest teeth were the most likely to suffer dementia. Researchers speculated that oral bacteria travel to the brain either via the bloodstream or through the cranial nerves. This bacteria could contribute to the plaque that’s been linked to Alzheimer’s.
