Are you suffering tooth problems? At Ironside Advanced Dental in Sydney we can assess your oral health and determine if your tooth problem is your jaw or your teeth.
Pain is often the biggest reason for a trip to the dentist. Many patients come to Ironside Advanced Dental thinking it’s tooth problems. Only on assessment, it turns out the problem is with their jaw.
The problem with pain is our body DOESN’T always send the right signals. What might seem like a tooth problem could actually be a problem with the gums, or the jaw.
Your teeth might feel as though they’re going to fall out. Only on assessment, it turns out you grind your teeth. Why do you grind your teeth? Well, that’s what Dr Ironside works to figure out. People grind their teeth for a range of reasons:
- Stress
- Anxiety
- Abnormal bite
- Crooked teeth
Grinding usually happens while you sleep
In most cases, patients grind their teeth while they sleep. So they don’t even know they’re doing it. All that happens is they wake up with:
- Sore teeth
- Sore Jaw
- Headaches
- Feeling tired
However, waking up tired with headaches and sore jaw could be caused by a number of different problems. Which is part of the reason why you should visit a dentist who will look at more than just your teeth?
In some cases, there are those who grind their teeth when they’re awake. However, because they catch themselves doing it, they can stop themselves.
But you can’t stop yourself when you’re asleep.
How to treat teeth grinding?
At Ironside Advanced Dentistry part of any successful treatment is talking with our patients.
If you grind your teeth because of crooked teeth or an abnormal bite: then we would treat these first. For crooked teeth, Dr Ironside would refer you to an orthodontist. For an abnormal bite, further assessment in the form of x-rays would be required to find the best course of action.
Stress is a whole other issue.
If, during your initial consultation with Dr Ironside, it is revealed stress is most likely the cause of your grinding, we can help.
Not with your stress. After all, Dr Ironside’s a dentist.
We can help by providing a bite splint to protect your teeth. A bite splint looks similar to a clear mouthguard, and you wear it while you sleep. The purpose of the bite splint is to protect your teeth and to stop the pain and tension headaches associated with grinding your teeth.
A bite splint isn’t a permanent solution
Depending on why you grind a bite splint isn’t a permanent solution. If the problem is medical then there is a chance of a cure. However, if stress is the cause of your grinding Ironside Advanced Dental can only help with the symptoms, not the catalyst.
