Things to consider when having cosmetic dentistry
The perfect smile is subjective; it depends entirely on you, your teeth and how you smile. For example, the reason for the discolouration of your teeth will determine the best way for your teeth to be whitened. And while most reasons for discolouration are cosmetic (coffee, tea, wine, chocolate etc.), there are health reasons such as decay that can cause discolouration.
The importance of your initial consultation
Dr Ironside needs to know what your desired outcome is because this—along with the state of your oral health—will determine the best way to proceed with treatment. If, on assessment at your initial consultation, we determine the cause of your tooth discolouration is not cosmetic other treatments will be considered. For example, you may require a filling and then a porcelain veneer. Or, you may need root canal therapy to stop the pain of inflammation and save the tooth from extraction: a dental crown may also be required on the treated tooth depending on the severity of the root canal therapy.
Cosmetic options for whitening your teeth
At Ironside Advanced Dental we offer two options for cosmetically whitening your teeth: Zoom tooth whitening & porcelain veneers. An advantage of veneers over tooth whitening treatments is veneered can also conceal minor imperfections such as chips and cracks. However, it is not uncommon for patients to have their teeth whitened prior to the placement of veneers.
Dental veneers only treat teeth in the smile zone
The smile zone is the 12 teeth most visible when you smile. Which is why it’s called the smile zone. The reason for combining the treatments is if you have a couple of teeth that have minor imperfections these can be treated with dental veneers. However, dental veneers, colour-matched to suit the colour of your teeth, cannot be whitened. So if you are unhappy with the shade of your teeth it is advisable to have them whitened prior to any cosmetic procedure.

The perfect smile depends on you; it depends on how you smile, your jaw; how well you look after your oral health.
