Fear of the dentist is a common occurrence, but with modern technology, there’s a solution

It is not uncommon to be afraid of an idea, especially when those around you do nothing to alleviate your fear. But did you know that fear of the dentist can be passed on from parents to children?

More specifically, a study conducted in 2014 found children whose dad was afraid of dental appointments ended up having a fear of the dentist themselves (review some of the research finding here).

Which is interesting. It’s not the dentist that people are afraid of it’s the dental appointment. It’s visiting the practice and dealing with the equipment associated with dentistry.

How a little boy cried wolf to avoid his dental appointment

Last month, a 12-year-old French boy told a rather tall tale in an attempt to not go to his dental appointment. When the police found him hiding he told them he had been kidnapped.

The boy provided a detailed description of his kidnapper, the car and how he escaped. When the police checked the CCTV footage it was obvious the boy had not been kidnapped.

He finally admitted he had hidden because he was too afraid to go to his dental appointment.

Fear of the dentist usually arises from past bad experience or the idea of dental equipment

With advances in technology, your dental experience is much smoother now than it has ever been. At Ironside Advanced Dental in Sydney, we use the wand when administering anaesthesia.

The wand administers anaesthesia in such a way as to eliminate the tell-tale bee-sting feeling commonly associated with anaesthesia.

Many of our older patients have cited past dental experiences as a reason for delaying their dental appointment. But we would urge you not to wait until your teeth fall out.

A regular appointment can save your teeth, your general health and your wallet. Your natural teeth are better for your oral health than missing teeth.

We are not making light of dental fear

The team at Ironside Advanced Dental in Sydney are a caring team of dental professionals who can help you through your dental appointment and ensure you get the care you need.

Whether it’s a simple check-up or more extensive work like dental crowns or dental implants, we’ll look after you throughout your treatment.

The wand decreases the discomfort you feel during injections and allows you to relax and negate your dental fears, concerns or anxieties.

Advantages of the wand:

  • Comfortable and non-threatening
  • Only the area that needs treatment is numbed
  • Consistent flow of anaesthetic
  • Virtually painless and eliminates the “bee sting” feeling
