How’s your smile looking? Have you noticed you’re smiling closed lips lately?

For many people, their smile can be a source of embarrassment. Discoloured teeth; chipped or cracked teeth; even missing teeth are often a reason to keep people close-lipped during a photo.

What we can say is…

Bad teeth, whether they are discoloured, chipped, cracked or missing can be a source of discomfort. Especially in situations where first impressions are important. What a specialist cosmetic dentist like Dr Ironside can do for you is restore the function and aesthetics of your smile. How that makes you personally feel depends on your individual circumstances and mindset.

A smile makeover by a prosthodontist

Also known as a smile reconstruction—because the aim of a smile makeover is to restore your smile, not give you an artificial smile—a smile makeover is a series of cosmetic and restorative treatments.

Some of the treatments that make up a smile makeover include:

When you visit Ironside Advanced Dental in Sydney, our prosthodontist Dr Ironside will assess your smile and discuss with you your expectations to determine the best way to proceed with treatment.

A prosthodontist is a dentist with extra university training and education who specialises in the placement of prosthetics.

A smile makeover

Part of any successful smile makeover is teeth whitening treatment. Before you have either dental crowns or porcelain veneers placed it is important you are happy with the colour of your smile. The reason for this is restorations are colour-matched to your teeth. And teeth whitening treatments have no effect on restorations.

So before any restorations are placed or fabricated, Dr Ironside will ask if you are happy with the colour of your smile. If you are not, we offer Zoom! Tooth whitening. This is whitening system takes an hour and can whiten your teeth up to eight shades.

Do I need veneers or crowns?

This depends on the health of your tooth. If a tooth has only minor (cosmetic) chips or cracks porcelain veneers are a suitable treatment. However, if the damage to your tooth is not cosmetic a dental crown is your best option. This is a strong and sturdy cap that covers your tooth and protects it from further structural damage.

It should be noted however that while crowns protect the tooth from structural damage there is no guarantee the tooth beneath the crown won’t become infected or damaged by decay. The most effective way to maintain the health of your treated teeth is to brush and floss regularly as well as regular visits to the dentists for check-ups and cleans.
